Who we are ?

The CLUB POLLEN was created in 1990 and gathers and gathers a lareg number of physicians: exclusive allergists, pneumo-allergists, pediatric-allergists, ORL-allergists from the area of St Etienne and in the district of Loire

The incidence of allergic affections in general, and the spring allergies in particular, is increasing with a significant repercussion on the quality of life of the allergic patient. The education and sensitizing of the medical profession, but also of patients, must lead to a better management of allergic patients.

This education and this assumption of responsibility pass by an early recognition of the allergic factors and an identification of the allergic risk incurred by patients to certain time periods of the year.

In order to apreciate this risk, a pollen trap has been placed in Saint-Etienne since 1987. It is intended to evaluate the pollinic contents of the air and its effects on the life of patients. It belongs to the National Network of Aero-biological Monitoring (RNSA) created by the Pasteur Institute of Paris (42 centers in France). The counting of pollens is carried out each year by the Meyrieux Institute of Lyon, from February to October. It is financed since 1997 by Air Rhone Alpes.

With an aim of knowing the arrival of pollens with a few days in advance, we have begun, in 1990, an original and multidisciplinary study.

  1. Collecting and pollinic counting.
  2. A clinical study carried out by specialist physicians, allergists, lung specialists, pediatrists, ORL. They note each day the number of consulting allergic patients, and study the characteristics of their allergies. Since 1996, we have an additional participation of about thirty general practitioners in this network.
  3. A collection of various weather parameters provided by the Departmental Center of Meteorology.
  4. A study of maturation of the accused plants allergizing, realized by the Laboratory of Plant Biology. Plants are collected on various sites, at different dates during the season. They are analyzed macroscopically and microscopically in order to determine the stage of maturation of the plants.

The data of the working groups are transferred to a computer. The first results enable to foresee the description of a weather parameter which is predictive of the arrival of pollens. This study must be continued several years to be validated statistically, but one sees already the interest to have a predictive factor, allowing us a preventive and concerted action for the allergic patients.
